Designing Within Constraints
Designing an escape room taught me that constraints are not simply obstacles to a plan. They help define what a useful solution looks like, especially when the conditions around it change.

When I founded my school's Architecture and Engineering Club, one of our most ambitious projects was designing and building an escape room for the school carnival. We planned different puzzles, mechanisms, decorations, and how participants would move through the room. On paper, there were a lot of things we wanted to do.
Once we began planning the actual construction, though, those ideas had to fit within what we had available. We had a limited amount of time, materials, space, and people to build it. An idea could sound great independently, but if it required too much time or made another part of the room more difficult to construct, we had to reconsider it.
In hindsight, I think we initially treated those constraints as things we would work around after deciding what we wanted to build. But they were part of the design itself. Having unlimited resources would certainly give us more options, but engineering rarely works under unlimited conditions. The more useful question was what we could create with the resources and circumstances we actually had.
Then, shortly before the carnival, we learned that we would no longer be able to participate. At that point, one of the largest conditions surrounding the project had completely changed. Continuing to prepare the escape room exactly as planned no longer made much sense, but neither did abandoning the work we had already done.
Instead, we changed the outcome of the project. We focused on developing a detailed plan for the escape room that could be used by others to construct it in the future. That required us to think differently about the design. It was no longer enough for us to understand how everything was supposed to work. The plan had to communicate the materials, layout, puzzles, and construction clearly enough that someone who was not involved in designing it could understand what to do.
I think constraints are sometimes treated as things that get in the way of a good idea. The escape room made me see them differently. Time, resources, space, and changing circumstances do limit what can be built, but they also determine what a useful solution actually looks like.
Looking back, I don't think the challenge was that the escape room was ambitious. Ambition gave us something interesting to work toward. What mattered was being able to change the design when the conditions around it changed. A good plan cannot guarantee that everything will happen as expected. It can, however, be designed well enough to remain useful when it does not.
